This project deals with the issues in society regarding women’s safety and the problems women face on a daily basis simply living their normal lives. It is an exploration of the various ways women keep safe and the commonness of sexual harassment. The starting point for this project was to gather research showing the different things women do to stay safe, and also note down all the words and phrases that have been yelled at women. Catcalling seemed to be the most common form of harassment, everyone I spoke to had experienced this at least once in their life. I chose to experiment with both constructed textiles and prints to communicate my ideas through different techniques to see what would be the best outcome. I chose to do a typography screen print onto fabric. I am interested in creating a statement piece that has a powerful and political meaning. It is important that my final garment really shows the injustices women face by reclaiming words and phrases that have been said when catcalling.
